I always loved the female singers of the 50's and 60's and bought just about everything by Brenda Lee,Connie Francis and Wanda Jackson. Nancy soon joined my exclusive collecting club in the very early 60's after I was lucky enough to pick up two 45's from a second hand shop (Cuff Links & Like I Do) but I had to wait a couple of years before i heard of her again and that of course was "Boots". The Lee Hazlewood duets have always been big favourites of mine and receive regular outings on my stereo system. Other favourite females include Cher,Debbie Harry,Jo Ann Campbell, and Dodo (Doris Day). I have dozens of cd's/videos/dvd's/albums by Dodo. Well i am 65 years of age so that's my excuse but I can still boogie on down to Girls Aloud. My top ten females Nancy Dodo Cher Brenda Lee Lorrie Collins (check her out) Connie Wanda Jackson Shania Twain Debbie Harry Jackie De Shannon
Anybody have any input on Lorrie Collins? Ed

Hi Ed, You know that I also like Jackie DeShannon. Hopefully our pal Hal will have some interesting chat for us regarding Jackie DeShannon. I have been listening to her a lot quite recently. 3 new CDs were issued by the RPM label just a few weeks ago, the LPs, "Put A Little Love In Your Heart", "Songs", and "For You". RPM have done a great job on the CDs, all with bonus tracks. I recommend them. Hopefully more will be released in the future. How many Jackie DeShannon CDs do you have, Ed?

Lea. I only have the ones you listed by Jackie De Shannon plus an aussie cd on raven called Best of 58-80. I have some old albums but nothing that has not been rereleased. Jackie teamed up Sharon Sheeley in the 50's/60's and together they wrote many many hits for the likes of Brenda Lee/Bobby Vee/Ricky Nelson/The Fleetwoods/and even the twangy guitar man Duane Eddy. A number of demos sung by PJ Proby/Glen Campbell turned up in 93 on the album In search of the American dream but to be honest they were very ordinairy. Jackie was supposed appear on the Winter Dance Party tour in Moorhead in 1959 which Buddy Holly never reached because of the plane crash and she recorded her first song "Buddy" as a tribute to him. One other that is worth checking out... Jackie DeShannon - Jackie... Plus I got this a few years ago. It was released on the Rhino label in the States and limited to a pressing of only 2500 copies. The CD features Jackie's work for Atlantic Records in the early '70s, plus many bonus tracks. More info here... www.rhino.com/store/ProductDetail.lasso?Number=7832

Other female singers other than Nancy? Favs that come to mind are Dusty Springfiled and Cher. Patsy cline had great voice.
Have you heard of a all female group called 'The Hazlewoods'? Some tracks sound a little like Nancy, and I am sure they named the group after Lee Hazlewood! A a little bit 'new country' with a few 'yeehas!' thrown in...lol

No, not heard of them before. I just looked them up on amazon.co.uk and found out some more about them.....
Formed in 1999, The Hazlewoods originally surfaced in Sydney under the banner of The Desperates and later on The Starlings. After playing no more than a handful of shows they went into hibernation whilst they looked to fill the shoes of their short-lived lead guitarist. During these dark months of patient searching, they doubled their repertoire, changed their name and landed a blazing new axeman, before ultimately hooking up with Laughing Outlaw Records!
On completion of their new five-piece line-up, The Hazlewoods didn’t waste any time and immediately checked into the studio to lay down some tracks. Drawing influences from Nancy Sinatra, Hank Williams, 50’s heroine Wanda Jackson, plus a good wholesome dose of The King - and you have the essence of where The Hazlewoods draw their inspiration.
The Hazlewoods have already graced the stage of Sydney’s pristine country extravaganza – ‘Hootenanny Spring Fair’ and were recent guests of the one and only, USA’s black godfather, Andre Williams and those crazy Texans, Slick Fifty Seven.

(1) Lorrie Collins was born in 1942 and together with her brother formed The Collins Kids. They performed mainly rockabilly songs and country songs and there are three dvd releases on Bear family worth checking out. Some of the performances are by Lorrie solo. She is still touring today with her brother and they do the oldies circuit. (2) Jackie De Shannon. Lea you should contact the following for lots of jackie info and goodies.Peter Lerner,4 Victoria Gardens,Marlowe Road,High Wycombe, Bucks HP SY. Peter puts out a magazine devoted to Jackie and is an expert in all things Jackie. (3) Patsy Cline. yeah my bad...I should have included her in my top ten. Ed

Lea's top ten female singers. Apart from the fact that most of them are dead, the remainder are twice Lea's age. Are you into necrophillia? Heard on the radio that Sandie Shaw has just become a grandmother. Glad you mentioned Vicki Carr as one of my all time favourite records is "It must be him". I actually bought that one when I was a young thruster,I even bought the follow up "With pen in hand" :(how sad is that). I've been playing Nancy's "Sheet Music" quite a bit lately and it's joined my list of favourites. Ed

Hey!! you cheeky bugger. Anyway, only two on my list have passed on, Peggy Lee and Dusty Springfield, and half of the rest are still actively performing today. Oh, and "necrophilia" only has one "L" in it. BTW, I thought this thread was about favourite female singers of the '50s and '60s. Ed, I also like girls groups my own age..... Shakira Girls Aloud Nelly Furtado Anastacia Pink I bet you like them too...... you dirty old man. ;D

Lea. There is a full clip from ed Sullivan show of Vicki Carr singing "With pen in hand" on Lea's Divas Video. Yes I do like the modern girls as well and will often watch FHM on satellite tv for the modern music, that's my story anyway. The good news re people like Vicki Carr,Dusty Springfield,Peggy Lee etc is that you can pick up their LP's from charity shops for 50p but I've only ever seen Nancy LP's in collector shops and they go for between £15 and £20 each. Let's have a top ten worst female singers, you probably will not agree with me but my top ten hates and I do mean hates as I can't bear to watch or listen to them are. 1. Wee Lulu 2. Cilla Black 3. Gracie Fields. 4. Chrissie Hynde 5. Diana Ross. 6. All the Tamla Motown female singers. 7. Aretha Franklin 8. Tina Turner 9. Celine Dion 10.All of the Spice Girls especially Posh Ed

Surprised to see Lulu and Cilla Black at the top of your worst list. They ain't that bad. I like 'em.
Ref/ The Spice Girls, I agree with you there, although I do think that baby spice Emma Bunton was the best of the bunch and I liked her voice. Her solo album from a couple of years ago was pretty good.
I can't think of many worst at the moment, but how about The Cheeky Girls ;D

Tiigs! I totally agree with you! Cher has an awsome voice! I LOVE her album "Heart Of Stone"! It's a classic! Dusty is also one of my favourites; "Time waits for no one" is my favourite, I guess, but "In Private" (the remix especially!) is one of her better acomplishments.
